Title: Boosting efficiency of III-nitride light-emitting diodes
Abstract:
Gallium nitride (GaN)-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have attracted considerable interest for applications in high-resolution full color displays, automotive front lighting, visible light communication and general lighting. However, the light extraction efficiency of GaN-based LEDs is limited due to total internal reflection (TIR) of the emitted light at the GaN-air interface. In addition, the internal quantum efficiency of GaN-based LEDs is limited by high threading dislocation density in GaN film due to the lattice mismatch and difference in thermal expansion coefficients between the GaN and the substrate. This presentation will outline the recent advances in improving crystalline quality and light extraction efficiency of III-nitride blue/green/ultraviolet LEDs using micro/nano manufacturing technology. Recent work in our research group in fabricating micro/nano-structures, such as surface roughening, V-shaped pits, patterned current blocking layer, patterned substrate with silica array, sidewalls nano-prism, metal reflector, and distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) will be discussed in this talk. Moreover, mini/micro-LEDs for high-definition displays will be introduced.
